Third Annual Gingerbread Party

This week we hosted the third annual gingerbread party for a few of our friends. Just for kicks, I went back to the first year photos. We were a smaller group back then as the babies at the time weren't in the photo and we have since added new babies to our group.

Gingerbread Party 2010
This week we hosted the third annual gingerbread party for a few of our friends. Just for kicks, I went back to the first year photos. We were a smaller group back then as the babies at the time weren't in the photo and we have since added new babies to our group.

2 years later, 9 kids, 2 babies
Our annual Gingerbread Party is one of my favorite Christmas traditions. This years party was a huge success with our most amount of kids yet. The children ranged in age from 6 years to 9 months, and each child seemed to enjoy themselves. Despite the additional children, this years party was almost the easiest with the bigger kids running off to play with each other and using their own creativity to decorate their houses, rather than relying on the mommies.

Lunch Time
It seems like just yesterday I was shopping with a few friends just after Christmas, snagging those cute gingerbread shirts the girls are wearing below. We bought bigger sizes, knowing the kids had a year of growing before they would use them. Maya was just a growing baby in my belly, kicking with excitement as we shopped. Since then, I've blinked and now have a 9-month old, almost 4 year old and the third annual gingerbread party has come to a close.

I am incredibly blessed to have such wonderful friends in my life.

And, of course I want to give a big shout out of thanks to my mom, Nana. Nana started this tradition with her own first grade classroom when I was just a child, always reserving time and energy at the end of the school day to do more houses with my brother and I. Since beginning my own tradition, my mom has been by my side helping make icing, assisting the kids, and playing with all 11 kids to give us mommies a little bit of downtime. Mom, you are awesome! Thanks for helping make this tradition a success!

Elliana's Concert Debut

This past weekend Elliana debuted in her first school performance. For weeks she had been dancing and singing around the house, in the car, at the grocery...practically anywhere she felt the urge. I loved everything about the performance, but perhaps my favorite part was the 3-year old rendition of Away in a Manger.

I couldn't videotape the whole performance, so Elliana sang a solo for me post concert for us to cherish. Enjoy!

Holy Smokes and Cows!

While driving home from running errands last night, we admired all of the Christmas lights adorning our community. Every house with even a single candle in the window grabbed the attention of Elliana and was followed by a loud exclamation of "CHRISTMAS LIGHTS!" as she pointed in the direction of the light.

Nearly home, we spotted a house that typically goes all out with the decorations and this year was no exception. Elliana, who rarely is out past nightfall hadn't yet seen this particular house ablaze with lights. And....then ....she.... saw it.

"HOLY SMOKES AND COWS!!! DID YOU SEE THE HOUSE?!" was shouted from the backseat. And all I could do was smile. I love how 3-year olds describe exciting events.

Elliana

Elliana, you are amazing. You have this joy about you, the kind that brightens even the darkest room. Your joy is infectious. You make me smile, from deep within, the kind of smile that reminds me of all the good in the world, all the joy, all the love.

In the past year, you have gone from getting 150% of my attention to having to share me with a new little person. And you haven't complained about it. Not once. In fact, you shower your little sister with love in a way that I didn't know was possible. Each morning, you greet Maya with a smile and excitement, and she returns the smile with giddiness and exhilaration that Mommy just can't generate in Maya.

You have an energy that I can't compete with, but I sure do try. We spend our days playing, learning and laughing. Each day you surprise me at least once, but probably more. Some days it is your kindness, the way you come in from a different room, lean into me or Maya and whisper, "I love you." The way you randomly say, "Daddy sure works hard for our family. I am so grateful for him." Other days, it is your remarkable intelligence. The way you retain vivid detail and the way you come up with elaborate stories during our play time, and have ideas on how to act them out. You are a sponge, soaking up everything around you.

Out of the blue you sing songs you've learned in school, spelling out colors or singing songs of thanks. I love your little voice, the way you hum in melody when you don't know the words or make up new lyrics, which almost always rhyme, even if the word is made up. That's impressive!
About 8 weeks shy of your fourth birthday, you decided you were no longer going to take naps. It's been about 2 weeks now since you last napped, but you still happily go to "rest" and play quietly by yourself for an hour or so each day. Your rest time allows Maya to nap uninterrupted and even allows Mommy & Daddy to take a nap on occasion. Thank you!

For several months now you have been obsessed with Rapunzel, long before ever seeing the film. We were fortunate enough to meet her a few months ago during our trip to Walt Disney World. Randomly you ask if she will still be there when we go back, even though we keep explaining we aren't sure when we will be going back, as 3 times in 3 years has been quite a lot. You wear your Rapunzel wig as frequently as allowed and twirl it and fling it at each chance you get. When you aren't wearing your hair, you announce, "I'm still Rapunzel, I just have short hair." :)

I could go on and on about you. The many things you do, the many ways your warm my heart and make me proud to be a Mommy. I love you sweet girl.

Maya's Special Day

A few weeks ago we were blessed with family coming to support and encourage us as we dedicated Maya to raise her to follow Christ.  We stood before our church, family and a bunch of people proudly pronouncing that we will do our best to lead a positive example of Christ in our lives, to teach her love, grace and forgiveness. It was a day of tearful joy, gratitude and abundant blessings.

The specialness wasn't lost on Elliana, as she proudly marched up onto stage, beamed with delight and prayed with us. After our turn on stage, we returned to our seats, where Elliana kept leaning over to whisper to Maya, "You did so great Maya. I am so proud of you little sister. I love you."

Lord, please bless this little girl, bless her with health, happiness, laughter, love and abundant blessings. We are grateful for each and every day that you have trusted us to be her parents.
